Background:
Most human immunodeficiency virus positive patients now have a longer life expectancy, with the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy. However, they are now at increased risk of developing a malignancy during their lives.
Aim:To investigate the age at which oral squamous cell carcinoma presents in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus.
Study design:Prospective, clinicohistopathological audit of patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus.
Results:Of 200 human immunodeficiency virus positive patients, 16 (8 per cent) presented with oral squamous cell carcinoma (nine women and seven men; age range 18–43 years, mean age 31.7 years). The majority of patients (62.5 per cent) had stage III and IV disease (tumour-node-metastasis staging). There was a predilection for poorly differentiated oral squamous cell carcinoma (using Broder's histopathological classification).
Conclusion:Oral squamous cell carcinoma associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection appears to present at a relatively young age.

This article identifies ways to overcome impediments to restoring natural features on developed shores where human-use functions are the dominant driving forces. Suggestions are made for (1) incorporating natural features and natural dynamism into beach nourishment projects; (2) addressing constraints in size and space; (3) reducing the impact of human actions and elements in the landscape; (4) integrating endangered species programmes; (5) overcoming impediments to implementing restoration projects; (6) conducting post-construction evaluations and actions; (7) obtaining public support; and (8) addressing regulatory issues. Beach nourishment projects can better mimic natural landforms, while protecting infrastructure and habitat, creating space for dunes, and providing sediment for dune building. Dunes can have more value as habitat if sub-environments representative of natural gradients are accommodated. Greater human effort will be required to maintain both dynamic and stable zones for habitat, and these zones may be restricted to smaller scales. Controls can be placed on human actions, such as raking the beach, driving on the beach, walking through the dune, emplacing more structures than necessary and introducing exotic vegetation for landscaping. Regulatory restrictions that now prevent environmentally friendly actions can be eased, and adaptive management and education programmes can be implemented.

Recombination between two strains of Metarhizium anisopliae, subcultured on artificial medium and passed through an insect host was investigated. When grown on agar culture, or passed through a host, strains did not show detectable genetic changes. When passed through an insect in the presence of the other strain, genotypic changes in the isolates, as detected by esterase electrophoresis, restriction digestion of total genomic DNA and RAPD-PCR, were apparent. The instability of molecular markers suggests recombination between strains.

The extracellular subtilisin-like protease activity of several fungal pathogens of nematodes, insects and plants was recorded after batch cultivation. Nematophagous and entomophagous isolates of Verticillium, Paecilomyces, Beauveria and Metarhizium produced Suc-(Ala)2-Pro-Phe-pNA hydrolysing enzymes that differed in serological properties based on Western blot analysis with polyclonal antibodies. The antibodies used were raised against the main subtilisin-like proteases from one species from each of the four genera. From each strain of V. chlamydosporium tested, between one and four isoforms with different pI values were separated by isoelectric focusing and visualized by enzymoblots. The occurrence of multiple isoforms with unique N-terminal sequences in single strains might suggest the presence of subtilisin gene families. Using as a probe a fragment of the Pr1 gene from M. anisopliae, RFLPs were observed that confirmed qualitative differences between subtilisin-like genes within and between species. In contrast to these pathogens of invertebrates, plant-pathogenic species of Verticillium did not produce subtilisin-like proteases, nor were homologous genes detected. Such activity, however, and the corresponding genes, were detected in species weakly pathogenic to plants, or saprotrophs.

A method is described for identifying strains of Metarhizium suitable for use in field experiments. It involves the restriction endonuclease digestion of a PCR product derived from the Pr1 protease gene and the analysis of the fragments by electrophoresis. Using this technique, 40 Metarhizium strains produced 15 different profile types and were clustered into four groups. Correlation between the profile of restriction fragments and geographic origin was observed for certain groups of strains. This PCR strategy allowed the identification of fungal strains, using as samples spores scraped from the surface of single insects killed by the fungus or single whole dead insects with external mycelium. The sequence of the Pr1 PCR product from two strains revealed that Pr1 gene has at least three introns.
